I was eighteen. A man in both body and mind. No longer was I the boy that wished to prove himself a man. There was no doubting it—everyone knew the man I had become. My wife, family and friends were proud of the person I now was.
Everyone knew, as did I, that as the first born son I would be the inheritor of my father's reign. Unless of course, something should happen to me.
Now, in being a husband and a prince, I was of the right mind to have many sons. This was, after all, the way of my people.
I was hunting, readying my wife, soon to be born child and myself for the winter that was quickly approaching. From afar I heard my sister's voice calling me. “Amari! Amari! Come... come quick! It is time!”
The thought came that I must have lost track of time, I had not realized that I had been away so long. That morning Sulika mentioning that she felt some discomfort. When I asked her if she would be alright, she assured me that she was fine, that there was nothing to worry about as she still had another two weeks before her child baring day. So clenching my teeth, I went ahead and left to hunt, deciding against my better judgment.
And yet, here was my little sister, gravely calling for me to return.
There was no denying it, the time had come. I would be a father. Today.
Running fast through the jungle, making certain that I would not miss the big event, I practically flew through it. All of the women gathered together in Sulika's birthing hut call out to me, urging me to hurry. Sulika had been calling for me. It was not customary that a man enter the birthing hut, but this time the women made an exception as I was being insistently requested by my wife.
Sulika's mother came to me, “Amari. Please, hurry. She has been calling for you.”
Sulika?” I called softly, she heard me and looked over in my direction. Her skin so very pale—a thin blanket of snow upon rich chocolate skin, it was. Completely flushed of color. Her lips were dry and cracked.
She saw me and reached to me, “Amari,” she spoke, so softly, so void of strength, that I barely made out what she had said. “Come.”
Closing the distance between us, I sat at her side and took her hand in mine. Then grabbed a rag that was beside me and wiped her head. “I'm here now. Fear not.”
She smiled a very weak, fragile grin, “Yes. Thank you.” This birthing was indeed taking a toll on her.
“No worries love, soon it will all be over and you will be holding our baby in your arms in no time at all,” I smiled at her and continued chatting, hoping inwardly that it was making her feel better. “It will be a boy. Strong, like his father. His mother's eyes. We will walk around the entire village displaying his greatness. Everything will be over before you know it.”
A contraction. She squeezed my hand with whatever strength she still contained. She moaned and whimpered. My heart broke for her. With my other hand, I rubbed her back, “I am here, love. I am right here.” She breathed, trying to ease the pain. Still it was of no use because she had no strength. No fight was left in her. So once again I commenced my babbling, hoping that to a certain extent it would help her feel better—even if just the slightest bit. “When he grows, I will make sure that he becomes the tribe's best hunter. And, he will be the tribe's strongest man,”
She looked at me with hopeless eyes. “What if it is a girl?”
“Well if it is a girl, she will look and be everything like her mother. Nothing like her father. I would not want to ruin a perfectly good thing.”
Another contraction. She tensed. I could feel the pain that ran through her also run through me. I wished and prayed to all the tribal gods that they would help me ease her pain somehow.
My mother pulled me aside for just a moment. “Amari, she is not well. We are doing everything we can. But, her labor is not normal. The child is breached. She is losing too much blood.”
My hands began to shake, I was irrecoverably unnerved. “What is going to happen, Mama?”
“I do not know my son. We are doing all that we can. I hope the gods help her through this.”
For a long time, I did not leave her side, not letting her hand go for a second. I could feel the life drain from her with every breath. I worried deeply for her and my unborn child.
After several hours of agony and pain, it was time.
All the women scurried around her, cheering her on as best as they could. Some ran about trying to collect cloths, others gathered hot water, some had tools in their hands. And Sulika, was weakened— flimsy and lifeless. I panicked. They were screaming, yelling, fussing about.
All of it seemed like a blur. My eyes were fixed on my wife, observing that she was even paler now,  than just a little while ago. I bent over her. If it was a reflex of protection or desperation, I do not know. I needed to collect my emotions. Then I kissed my wife's forehead and whispered into her ears. “Everything is going to be alright.”
“No... it is not.” was her reply, and her words seeped out of her lips like soft, supple smoke from a dimming candle. Barely audible, barely there.
“Push, Sulika, push!” Someone demanded. She used whatever strength she had and pushed. This went on for just a few minutes. At one given moment she pushed with all her might. Then, I heard my wife take a long aching breath, and breathed no more.
My heart dropped to my stomach.
I looked at her, staring, hoping that what I had just seen was in my own imagination. I heard more commotion. The women were running amuck. They began to yell and scream to each other.
Everything turned into slow motion. Muffled voices, screams and cries. Yet my eyes were fixed on my wife.
For a split second I looked down at the child. A girl. She was right, but the babe was lifeless as well. She flopped like a wet rag in the arms of my mother-in-law.
Just like that, it was all over. My wife and my child were gone. I had lost everything that meant anything to me in a matter of a day. I was broken. Destroyed.
I named the child Alala, meaning like a dream—for that was all that she had been. A dream...
We buried them together, the tomb read; “My FIRST and ONLY wife, Sulika and our little angel Alala. You will never be forgotten.”

Unbind by Sarah Michelle Lynch

Welcome RWPPs,

Are you in the mood for a FREEBIE? Who isn't, right? Here we have a great one for you today...

Today we present you with Unbind by Mrs. Sarah Michelle Lynch.

First a little bit about the Author:

Author Bio:

Sarah’s first job was opening a newspaper shop, when she was just seventeen. It was a good exercise in discipline, having to get up at 5a.m. on a weekend morning. Since then, she has worked all kinds of jobs including cafe assistant, student mentor and ambassador, checkout girl, bartender, shelf stacker, supply teacher and after graduating university, magazine journalist. The jobs may have come and gone but the urge to write was ALWAYS there.

Sarah is the eldest of four children and was the first person in her family in generations to go to university. She holds a degree in English from The University of Hull but it wasn’t until she began working in the media that she really got to grips with how writing could become a profession. She worked alongside various companies including Sky, Radio Times and Bauer, eventually climbing the ranks into junior management.

During a long period of maternity leave she discovered how different creative writing and professional, journalistic writing are. The decision to self-publish was not taken lightly but in May 2012, she let loose her first novel and a scifi trilogy was born. The trilogy has since been re-edited and transformed into a quadrilogy. Since then, the desire to write and explore has become viral and she has even set up her own business, helping other writers get their own words and stories out into the world.

Sarah currently lives in East Yorkshire with her husband and daughter.

Unbind Blurb:

We should chase away from what we’re scared of, right? Run as fast as we can. Yet some of us seem to veer toward chaos and destruction…

Chloe sees anguish and despair lurking beneath the surface of Cai Matthews, the dark and dangerously handsome freelance photographer she meets on her first day in a new job. She can’t see straight in his presence—blinded by a blistering sexual attraction that has the potential to sweep her clean off her feet.

When Cai disappears from the workplace and doesn’t come back, Chloe tries to find out more about his life but all she knows is he’s set to inherit a ton of money and his aunt runs one of the most famous fashion magazines in the world.

Cai is running from a complicated past he doesn’t like talking about. Gossip columns rage with speculation concerning him and his aunt, who took guardianship of Cai after his parents died.

Conscientious journalist Chloe has a mind for details and once she gains access to his world, Cai realises she could undo every, single dirty little secret that he and his aunt have tried desperately to cover up.

Happy Anniversary Reflections of Soul

Today All Authors is happy and proud to showcase one of their own. Today, Queen of Spades shares with us a little bit about her poetry book Reflections of Soul in celebration of its one year release anniversary.

I asked Ms. Spades to tell us a little about my two favorite pieces in the book, Butterfly & Human. Here is what she said:

Butterfly:

I see a butterfly
I like to call Happiness
sitting upon
a yellow rose petal.
I crouch low in the grass,
anticipating capture.
When I am almost near the flower,
it decides to fly away.

I see a butterfly
I like to call Happiness
sitting upon
my window sill while I’m cleaning.
My movements become slow,
steadily deliberate.
I almost touch its’ feet
when it’s on its’ way again.

I see a butterfly
I like to call Happiness
sitting upon
the leaves of a tree,
but this time, I ignore it
and proceed to my writings,
but this time around,
it takes a seat on my knee.

Could this possibly mean
that Happiness is also
meant for me?

And as if it sensed my thought,
it again decided to flee.

But this time, I’m not worried.
It’ll come back,
eventually.

****
Queenly Thoughts:

For me, a butterfly is one of the best personifications of happiness. Butterflies are beautiful and carefree: they will let you look and admire but take off when you get too close. Butterflies are also delicate—just like Happiness can be from time to time.

There are some people in the world that believe Happiness isn’t made for them or they don’t deserve to be happy. Butterfly explores the concept that Happiness is possible for everyone but it comes in a series of waves and flows. I believe one cannot fully appreciate Happiness unless one has gone through the sad times. Sometimes rather than trying so hard to chase it down it’s best to let Happiness come to you—just like the butterfly ended up doing at the end. This is one of my favorite pieces in the collection: as it relates to message and the feel good ambiance.

HUMAN:

There’s something about being Human
that should be Humane,
but instead, we are Hindered
by other thoughts in our brains.

There’s something about being hUman
that should be Unique,
but over time, we are made Ugly
by deciding to cling to conformity.

There’s something about being huMan
that should be Moral,
but sooner or later, we become Marred
as materialistic tendencies leave their scars.

There’s something about being humAn
that should be Admirable,
but over time, we become Asses,
snubbing others who don’t fit social classes.

There’s something about being humaN
that should be Nice,
but sooner or later, we are made Numb,
uncaring of the pain which others succumb.

And seeing

Hateful glances
Ugly actions
Malicious mischief
Acts of anarchy
Nonchalant expressions

make me not
want to be
HUMAN.

I’m tired of playing the role!
Sick of Society’s structure!
The game of Life is actually rigged—
whatever thing you choose,
you’re destined to lose.

Now that I’ve accepted it
I can finally smile
while skin and blood intermingle
and I sleep for a while.

****

Queenly Thoughts:

One style that I have liked to use over the years is to take a letter in a word and expand on it. I used this method in the composition of HUMAN. Through getting older and living in different places, I have a fear that unconditional humanity is becoming extinct. I came from a background where a neighbor helped another neighbor—just for the sake of giving. Now people are very cautious of giving help because they are anticipating the worst. People are reluctant to receive help because of the fear there’s an unspoken price tag associated with it. The back and forth banter with each letter—from Humane vs. Hindered to Nice vs. Numb represents the yin and yang that exists within the human condition. Although I recognize that the good qualities shine more when they have adversaries, it can be perilous when the balance is disrupted. Everywhere you turn, there are horror stories (from car accidents and corruption to poverty and murder), yet the responses are met with shades of indifference:

“It happens a whole lot, so we’re used to it.”

“At least it didn’t happen in my family or in my neighborhood.”

“No need of saying anything. My voice has no meaning.”

“That person would’ve done the same thing to me.”

HUMAN is just the magnifying glass to the things already in play. In my opinion, using this style (as opposed to just doing the typical construct of stanzas) provides more of an impact. One is drawn to the capitalization as well as the tug of war between each positive and negative correspondence to each letter that forms the word "HUMAN". That is what made it the trickiest to pull off. Yet I am pleased with the end result.
