Excerpt:

“Girl, I can’t believe he did that shit!”
Sabrina was now on the phone with her friend, Rachel. This day was one of the worst days of her life. She couldn’t believe she had gotten fired and the behavior of Mr. Torrance. He was using his personal feelings to try and justify this decision. The thing that pissed her off the most was that Veronica had set out to ruin her.
“Yeah, I can’t believe it either. Especially Veronica. The bitch had me on tape! I couldn’t say shit to defend myself!”
“So Sabrina, what are you gonna do?”
“Find another job; what else?”
“I mean, do you have enough in your savings to cover the rent? I know the place you are in now is hella expensive.”
“I got enough back in my savings for another four months or so, but after that, I’m going to have to find a new place to live.”
“Well love, you can always move here.”
She and Rachel had talked about this before. Sabrina knew that Rachel had feelings that went beyond friendship. As much as she loved Rachel as a friend, she didn’t have feelings for Rachel that extended past that point. This was why she would usually reject Rachel’s offers for help.
However, her back was up against the wall.
She knew it wouldn’t take long before word got back to her father, if it hadn’t already. Her father would not be pleased, since he pulled some major strings for her to work at Joynt Enterprises. It would hurt her greatly if her father’s business got negatively impacted due to her fallout with Mr. Torrance. She didn’t know if she’d be able to face him or if she could live with her father, given the circumstances.

Description:

The wizard wars ended over a thousand years ago, and nearly all the ancient wizards were destroyed. The evil betrayer, the one who started the war to begin with, remains. For a thousand years he has worked his will in secret. His goal is to find the last Dragonwand so he can regain his powers as the dark dragon. Close to the king of Gallenor and master of the court, the betrayer has the nation bowing to his machinations.
Sixteen year old Markus is looking for a wizard who will give him a letter of recommendation for the college of wizardry. Unaware of the Dragonwand or the betrayer, he stumbles upon Tolen the Wise. Little does Markus realize that this man is an ancient, like the betrayer. Instead of giving him a letter, Tolen sends Markus on a journey to stop the darkness by finding the Dragonwand before the betrayer can.
Markus and the friends he meets along the way are the only ones that stand between the betrayer and the fruition of his millennium of preparation. Will Markus get to the wand first? Where are all the other wizards? Can the betrayer truly be stopped?

Except:

Markus hurt and he was sinking fast. He looked up to see the light above him and he started to swim to the surface. It was a burdensome challenge with what felt like a broken arm.
What was that?! Something just shot into the water, then another. Arrows! Someone was shooting at him!
Cresting the water and gasping in a harsh breath, Markus saw that two dogkinds were pointing arrows at him from the shore. The Dog people of the Blue Forests were expert marksmen and would not miss unless that is what they intended.
“GET OUT OF OUR WATERS, IMP!” a strong female voice yelled at him.
Markus continued to breathe hard and struggled to keep himself afloat. Moving was even harder, since he only had one good arm. “I..I can’t! I need help!” He garbled out as loud as he could while the water began to consume him, the pain in his arm too great to hold him up.
The light brown furred canine woman looked at the man next to her, “He may not be an imp. Rescue him before he drowns.” She commanded and the male dogkind dropped his bow and jumped into the water.
After a swift swim and quick rescue, Markus was laid on the shore by his hero. He coughed while doing his best not to show the pain he was in. “Thank you, whoever you are.”
Then he heard the stretching sound of an arrow being readied. He looked up to see the point of it directed at his face. The brown furred dog woman flashed her fangs, “What sort of being are you?”
“Human,” he quickly stated while holding his arms up in defense.
She glared at him and then released the arrow. It struck the ground right next to his head. In fact he felt the shaft of the arrow brushing up against his ear.
“WHAT ARE YOU DOING!!?” He tried to scoot away from her, but his broken arm prevented the escape. “OW, OW, OW!”
She lowered her bow and leaned over to look at him, “If you were impkind, you would have transformed back and flown away.”
His eyes bugged, “Imp! You thought I was an imp?!”
The male dogkind held out his hand to help Markus up, “We have been tracking a rogue imp through these trees for a week now. It has played many devious tricks on us to attempt to lull us into a false sense of security.”
“I can assure you that I am no imp. I am human and in a lot of pain.” He got to his feet and held his broken arm.
The male dogkind looked at Markus's arm and then nodded toward the trees, “Come with us, our healer can mend that easily.”
“Thanks. Where do you live?”
“These forests are our home.”
“So, what is your name? I am Markus of the Valley.”
The male dogkind answered, “I am Treb, that is my wife Kiin.” Treb noticed that Markus was getting a good look at his wife’s back side, in particular her tail. “Have you not seen my kind before?”
Markus looked up, embarrassed at having stared at this man’s wife. “No, in fact I have not. I know of your people, you’re dogkind.”
Kiin shot Markus a glare, “That is the human name for us. We are the Rakki.” She was proud of this title and made sure he knew it.
“Rakki it is then.” A glow of green light caught the corner of his eye and he looked just in time to see it coming. “WATCH OUT!”
Treb grabbed Markus and pushed him out of the way just as the bolt of energy blasted the ground near them. Both dogs grabbed their bows and nocked arrows in them to fire. Flying around was a small demon with bat wings. It was an imp, a mischievous pest that had no feelings for what it destroyed.
Kiin launched arrow after arrow at the little monster, only to miss. She was good, but it was faster than her and could evade her with ease. Cackling, the imp lobbed more energy balls. With a well-placed shot, it threw Kiin across the ground and partly into the water. She was out cold, but still breathing. Then it turned its sights on Markus.
Without hesitation Markus held out his hand and said, “WAND!” It appeared on command. He log rolled to the side to dodge a green energy blast and then he yelled, “ELDR!” The wand produced an impressive ball of fire that destroyed the next incoming energy attack and continued on to blast the imp out of the air. When the little creature hit the ground Treb sent one last arrow at it, piercing it through. Within seconds the imp exploded in a flash of green.
Markus sat for a second, shocked by his own power. He had never created a spell that well and that powerful before.
“KIIN!” Treb ran over to his wife and found her on the ground, out cold.
Markus got up and quickly joined him. “Is she okay?”
Treb looked her over, sniffing her with his nose. “I don’t know. She is still breathing and does not look hurt, but she won’t wake. Damned imp spells.”
“What can we do?”
Treb looked at Markus and then at his wand, “You’re a wizard, can’t you do something?”
Markus shook his head and stepped back, “No, I…I am not a real wizard. I am not even an apprentice.”
“Come, we have to return to the village. The healers can help.” Treb gently picked up his wife and carried her in his arms. Markus took up Kiin’s bow and carried that as he followed right behind them.

Concordant Vibrancy: Unity, An All Authors Anthology BOOK RELEASE

Welcome one and all! Thanks for joining us today in the celebration of the Release of Concordant Vibrancy: Unity, An All Authors Anthology.

Blurb:

All Authors Publishing House, a subsidiary of All Authors Publications & Promotions, is pleased to present its first short story anthology, Concordant Vibrancy .

Short stories in this collection:
"Butterfly Mask" by Nicola McDonagh

"Seven Days" by Harmony Kent
"Touch Me" by Andrea Houtsch
"... and we" by Adonis Mann
"Til Death Do Us Part" by A. Lopez Jr.
"Coalesce" by Da'Kharta Rising
"Her A to Z" by C. Desert Rose
"Lester's Release" by Synful Desire
"The Authentic Snap" by Queen of Spades
"Alma's Unsung Angel" by Y. Correa.

What makes Concordant Vibrancy Different than most Short Story anthologies?

It was best described by Y. Correa, the Founder of All Authors Publications and Promotions ...

Excerpt of Concordant Vibrancy:

Once upon a time I sat under a large and old tree—the tree was surrounded by many others like it, all of them contented with one another.
I marveled at the wave of wind that passed by, which like an invisible tide drew past the trees making the leaves on them swish like the perfect choreographed symphony—first one, then swiftly and smoothly the rest followed in suit. It was an inspiring thing to behold.
I thought …
There is no better demonstration of unity than that of Mother Earth. She teaches us that all things are connected—the heavens to the earth, the earth to the ocean, the ocean to the heavens—round and round it goes, dancing without squabble in absolute unison. It truly is a beautiful thing to see.
In addition I pondered …
As the matter of fact, the bigger picture is that the entire universe is connected. Whilst our planet is the size of a marble in comparison to the enormity of our universe, that by no means makes us any less valuable. She, Mother Earth, depends on the universe and vice versa. Could you imagine the impact on our solar system if just one planet became misaligned with the rest, just the smallest bit askew? We would all feel the repercussions of that micro-movement. The surface of earth would spin out of control, ravaging humanity with a cataclysm of natural devastation.
And so, I thought further, and said to myself, “Does humanity not realize the impact they have between one another? Do they not see that one action of strife can cause a wave of destruction?”
While it is true that I do not know you, I know this; you and I are linked simply because we are inhabitants of this planet.
Why do I say these things? Because unity was the foundation of the establishment of All Authors Publications and Promotions.
A year and a half ago a thought occurred to me, it was “Why are authors competing with one another? Why can’t they just work together?” Now I’m certain that I was not the first person to think that way, and certainly not the first to act on it, but I did see that while some authors were trying to work together they were doing it in a way that rivaled one another. It was around that time that the idea of the All Authors Blog Blitz crossed my mind.
I’d done some research on Blog Blitzes, their use and aim, and I thought, we can all do that together. We can create a tidal wave of recognition if we just work together.
What I did not expect was all that would follow after the All Authors Blog Blitz. In less than a year’s time, All Authors Publications and Promotions was born. A place created by an author, for authors, trying to establish unity in this market.
In time the All Authors Magazine was born, then All Authors Graphic Design, then the All Authors Certificate of Excellence, and many more projects.
Some people ask me why I chose the name All Authors. Well, that’s pretty self-explanatory, it’s because we advocate all authors, and try to reach all readers.

So, like leaves on a tree, we are all connected.

Mother Earth, the best example of unity mankind has.

Hello RWPPs,

Today we are happy to Spotlight the Creator and Founder of All Authors Publications & Promotions, and her novel "MarcoAntonio & Amaryllis".

Blurb:

The year 1585. The Anglo-Spanish War. England’s greed for Spain’s crops, land, and supplies gives birth to the inertia of intolerance on both sides. Yet, even then, Love surges forth.

MarcoAntonio, a Spanish gentleman and knight, defied all boundaries of color and culture, when setting eyes on the English lady Amaryllis. Although to others, he may be a bit reserved, he dares to lower his defenses solely for her.

Amaryllis is an English lady. One with an open heart, gentle spirit, and shining eloquence. She knew that she should not desire MarcoAntonio. Still, a love feeling so right couldn’t be so horribly wrong!

Travel with MarcoAntonio and Amaryllis as they duel with internal and external forces threatening to tear their powerful love apart. In the midst of troubles the likes of which have no compare, MarcoAntonio and Amaryllis find themselves having to fight the most unexpected of adversaries, just for the right to love each other.

Discover why their LOVE is the result of ALL things conquered!

Excerpt of Chapter One:

Midnight. Still he had yet to take recess from his vigorous stride. He had to make it. He needed to see her! Just a glimpse, as always, would make his day complete. Just a small glance at her smile and her eyes; that was all he needed. All he truly needed to commence the fight all over again tomorrow. His faithful steed, as accustomed, did not give up on him even after an entire day of battle.
His life wasn't easy. His battle was continuous. If he was not battling against others, he was at war with himself. As he rode he thought, and it occurred to him that his internal war could quite possibly be the biggest fight of his life.
“Mush, Altivo, anda!” he called out, as he coaxed his exquisite Caspian horse to move forward. “Anda, Altivo!” He’d learned that he could count unconditionally on his beautiful Altivo. He was after all, the only true friend that MarcoAntonio had. He knew what it was like to have acquaintances come and go through his life. He knew people. Many people. Yet, none was as true a friend as Altivo, his milk chocolaty, muscular, and strong Caspian horse. Altivo knew how to listen when necessary. He also knew how and when to act when necessary. What more could any man ask for from a friend?
His focus returned to her. What cruelty life offered him, that his one true love was unattainable? Yet, obtaining her was his only conviction—his only mission and obsession. She was in fact, the most beautiful woman he'd ever known both inside and out. She'd yet to fully be his, but he was certain that one day, she would be his—totally and completely. He would fight for her until he exhaled his last breath. Even if that were the very cost.
However, for today he'd be content, as he always was, with just looking at her from afar. Contemplate her beauty and know—in the depths of his soul—that this was a battle worth fighting.
“Altivo, stop! Para!” Digging his front hooves into the dirt, Altivo came to a screeching halt. MarcoAntonio had been so preoccupied in his train of thought, that he'd barely realized they'd arrived. His body slightly thrust forward with the abrupt stop. He leaped off his horse, checked his hip for his sword, and took in hand his ebony shield. Even though it was the middle of the night, time and space was never to be trusted. Things lurked everywhere. In his experience, he knew that the most unexpected things could happen at any given moment. It was always best to be prepared.
Unhinging a small sack from Altivo's saddle, he tossed it lightly in his hand. These small jewels were what he used as pebbles to toss at the balcony of her quarters. What use did he have for them anyway? He owned millions. Yet, he wanted none. So why not use a precious stone to tap the window of his precious treasure?
Tossing the first blood ruby, he called—his Spanish accent as natural as the air he breathed. “Psst!” No answer. He tossed another, this time an emerald as green as the forest. “Psst! Amaryllis! I am here.” He called out again in a strong whisper. He listened. He heard some rustling around.
The first thing that he caught a glimpse of was her hair as it came floating over the edge of the balcony wall, and grazed the ledge. Then her head leaned over and she looked down.
There they were. Those eyes. That smile. They were enough to melt even the coldest of hearts. Everything about her made his heart skip a beat. Her long, luscious, silky hair that was the perfect combination of fire and ice and all neatly intertwined into the most vivid shades of red and gold. Her bright, sea blue eyes, which seemed to carry the entirety of the ocean within them. The milky brilliance of her skin. The birthmark that was placed just above her lip, which seemed to be set in exactly the right spot to accent her lips and all of her beauty to perfection. Her body. That alone was enough to make any goddess jealous. She was not too thin. MarcoAntonio appreciated a woman that looked healthy. Amaryllis was just right, in every way… at least in his opinion.
“You are late,” she pointed out.
“Well, that may be true, Ma’ Lady.”
“'Tis!” she said in a teasing tone and then smiled again. “You cannot stay long. I'm being watched.”
“And?” he replied with mockery lingering in his voice.
Amaryllis giggled a little; covering her mouth she tried her best to keep quiet. His wit always made her laugh. Then she quickly got serious. “MarcoAntonio, 'tis dangerous. You know this to be true. 'Tis always a risk to visit me at these hours, my love.”
“And this is precisely why I love her so!” he stated bravely as if he spoke to an audience. “Amidst everything, my beautiful lady is always concerned for the well-being of her knight. Knight, may I remind, ma' lady!”
“A knight that appears to be looking for trouble, should our foes become aware of his scrambling.”
“Let them become aware!” He raised his voice, still with lightness and taunting sounding in it. “Should they come, I will slay them!” He pulled his sword from his hip and began a little dance. Bouncing around, sword in hand, he swung it in the air as if he were fencing against the strongest of men. “I will give them a little of this. Then a little of that.” He jumped in Altivo's direction. “And my trusted steed shall save me, and whisk me away into the darkness of night.” He turned to look up at her. “Of course, never, before first having valiantly saved Ma’ Lady?” Then tossing his arm into a whirl in front of him, he bowed at her graciously.
Amaryllis giggled some more, covering her mouth with her hand. “You shall never change, will you?”
“Why should I, Ma' Lady? If I change then I shall lose my most precious treasure. Your love.”
“Well, I suppose that is true, noble sir.”
“'Tis, Ma’ Lady.” He smiled at her.

What was it about him that made her insides flutter about? She couldn't explain it. She didn't understand it, but she liked it. No. She loved it! The single thought of his visit would cause butterflies to make themselves at home in her belly. And, his smile! So gentlemanly, so lively, in so many ways, that it alone filled her with the desire to live. As if his livelihood, gave her life—no matter how hard the situation between them could be.
She knew, as well as he did, that life was unfair. Their situation was cruel. She could not love him. Yet, she did. He could not love her. Yet, he did. What would they do?
It would be far beyond her family to understand that she, a white English lady, was in love with what they would easily call a worthless, putrid, power thirsty, Spanish man.
They despised him and all others like him. They would never allow her to be with him. They, and all others like them, would be completely opposed to their union—and she knew of many: the town’s people, her extended relatives, the witches.
The witches! The thought of them alone caused a shiver to rise up and down her spine. She'd been fortunate enough to never have encountered them. She'd heard plenty about the evil coven of witches—a clan that the townspeople called “The Sisterhood.” This was truly a group of individuals that no rational minded person would want to encounter. One would have to be mad. Only a mad person would go to such lengths as to summon The Sisterhood.
Yet, he was beautiful to her—her dear and beloved MarcoAntonio. His shoulder length shiny black curls, penetrating long dark lashed, bright brown eyes with dark masculine eyebrows that were the perfect accent to them. Medium tanned, amazingly melded, milk and caramel skin. The ruggedness that his entire aura put off, yet the childish sense of joy and playfulness, which he only displayed to her and no other.
He was amazing to her. He was so handsome with his five o'clock shadow, a day's growth of hair. Rugged and strong. A soldier in every sense of the word.
He was the perfect height for her as well, standing at about five feet, eleven inches: a precise compliment to her five feet, six inches. His stature was so manly—so perfect. She could not ask for more. And his smile? Goodness. His smile made her knees go weak!

Suddenly feeling the need to get to the point of his visit, MarcoAntonio became instantly serious. “Ma’ Lady, I wanted to come see you before the sun's rise.” Amaryllis nodded her head only once and smiled with the sweetness that filled her soul each time she remembered what her smile did to him. She was more than aware that her smile lit up his day. And this was precisely what she intended. She felt the need to provide him with even the smallest bit of happiness, knowing to what extent he went through in order to see her. His sole endeavor was to see her. A small honest smile and a whispered word of hope—that was all he needed to go on. She knew it, and so did he. “Thank you, my brave and valiant knight. ’Tis a privilege for me to see you.”
“Ma’ Lady, the pleasure is mine,” he said, tilting his head down into a modest bow. “Ma’ Lady, beautiful and honorable damsel, I thank you.”
“For what, silly?” she pleasantly interrupted.
“For the blessing of allowing me the sight of you. For the privilege of looking upon you. For the simplest gesture of your smile. For the lightness that your presence gives my heart.”
“Ah! Well bold sir, 'tis my pleasure indeed,” she said with a smile. Then immediately became serious once more. “Now, go! Go, before someone sees you!”
“Aye, Ma’ Lady. But, 'tis only because you have asked,” MarcoAntonio decided to point out. “'Tis not because they scare me!”
“Yes. Yes. I know, bold sir. Now go! Hurry!”
“Aye,” he said. Bending down, he picked the rose closest to him and tossed it up towards her. “A rose, for a rose.” Extending his arm out, leg forward, he bent into a noble bow. “Good night, Ma’ Lady.”
It seemed that every time he said good bye, his heart broke just a little bit more. He could not be sure when his next visit to her would be, but he made it his mission to visit whenever able. This was after all, his only reason for living.
Leaping back on to his horse, MarcoAntonio locked his heels into Altivo's side. “Anda, Altivo!” The horse spun around, and at that very instant, MarcoAntonio looked back and blew a kiss to his lady love. She in turn did the same. Just like that, Altivo took off into the darkness of night.

Excerpt from "The Gathering"

The early morning silence of the village was heavy in the cool autumn air, but that would soon change as it was the third Sunday of November, the Gathering.
This was the time when all of the villages gathered at the chosen colony to trade goods and tales, and when families and friends were re-united.  The last Gathering of the year would be in Lia Fail, the great pagan village, resting tall on top of the Santa Monica Mountains, just above the ruins of the old Hollywood sign.
The quiet of the morning was as yet undisturbed, save for the few sentinels at their posts, occasionally shifting their gaze from one end of the horizon to the other in bored observation.
A giant stone wall surrounded the town, allowing the sentinels to see over both valleys.  Every two hundred feet sat a giant tower.  A walkway extended the entire length of the wall, running through each tower.  The village was a fortress.
There were some gardens in the settlement, but most of the crops were outside the wall, as were many of the herding animals that grazed among the chaparral, and were being tended to before the sun rose.  A creek running along the edge of the village supplied water for the community.  In addition to the creek, an underground spring ran through the center of the town, where several wells had been placed to benefit the settlement.
The giant stone wall was eight feet thick and secured by steel, and two main gates at the front and rear of the colony had been fortified by giant metal portcullises.
The entire area was reminiscent of a medieval castle, save for bits of technology like the windmills that grew from behind homes and parapets, and solar panels that were attached to the highest roofs and turrets.  The rays of the sun rose higher in the sky and began to reflect off the panels, causing the light to dance and sparkle.
Sean Lantry, the captain of the guard, appeared from the lower hall of the barracks and moved steadily across the courtyard to the stairs of the eastern wall.  His lean, muscular build advanced easily up the steps.  As he approached the battlement, his gaze was turned to the rising sun.  The light reflected against his long, wavy brown hair, blowing gently around his stubble-strewn, darkly tanned face.  He closed his eyes to a squint in an attempt to make out the figures riding from the edge of the valley.
"Creegan! Jones!"  He pointed towards the moving figures.
The two guards glanced in the direction their captain had indicated.  Molly Creegan, a tall, thin woman in her mid-twenties with short black hair and almond-shaped gray eyes, grabbed a pair of binoculars and looked to the east, positioning them to get the best angle without being blinded by the ever-increasing light of the sun.
There, in the distance, she saw six riders approaching the village.  No banner was waving, but they rode in a familiar fashion.  The other guard, Arthur Jones, then adjusted his eyeglass and recognized the lead figure.
"It's her, Captain," he shouted.
Sean grinned and called to the soldiers by the entrance.
"Open the gate!"
Sean turned back to Molly.
"Did she catch anything?"
Molly stared back through the binoculars and began to smile, then pulled the binoculars down and looked slyly at her partner.  Arthur Jones was a short, stocky young man, with a head full of short, strawberry-blond hair; he too began to smile as if in anticipation of what she was going to say.
"Well, she appears to have a hell of a catch on her horse, Sir, but my gut tells me that it isn't hers," Molly said.
Sean smiled and waved Jones and Molly back to their posts.  The two soldiers laughed and turned as Sean trotted down the winding steps, back to the courtyard.
The first signs of activity began to fill the village as the soldiers moved to the front of the parapet where several more guards were pulling the gates open.  Despite the early hour, several faces peered out their windows into the courtyard as the soldiers' shouts echoed against the stone.
As Sean approached the bottom step, Vivian Shorely, chancellor to the queen, was waiting in anticipation.
"What is she doing out there unattended, Captain?"
Sean gazed at the thin, pinched face of the middle-aged woman and smiled slowly, cocking his head.
"I have no idea, Chancellor, I wasn't invited."
He moved around Vivian and continued towards the gate.  Vivian's mouth dropped open at the obvious dismissal.  She shook her head and spun on her heel in pursuit.
"See here, Captain!  It is your responsibility to look after the safety of the queen, is it not?"
Sean turned to the woman, who had to stop suddenly so as not to run into him.
"I beg your pardon?" he asked.
"I said," she began sarcastically, "is she or is she not your responsibility?"
Vivian folded her arms in front of her as she smugly completed her sentence.  Sean took a step up to her and put his face to hers.
"See here, Woman…"
She gasped, "Woman?"
"I realize to some it might be hard to tell, but you are a woman, right?”
Vivian scrunched her little face into a frown as Sean continued.
“Yeah, here's the deal… it’s my job to make sure everyone in this village is protected and if the queen should choose to leave the safety of these walls, which is her prerogative, then I have no control over that."
Vivian's tight face became even more pinched as she tried to respond, but was once again rebuffed as Sean turned and walked in the direction of the approaching riders.
From the wall above, a young sentry called out, "Here they come!"
Through the gates, the horses pounded into the quad, led by the queen.  Her auburn hair resembled spiral flames as it flowed behind her.  She wore a small leather top and long leather pants.  The sun glistened off her tanned and muscled body as steam rose from her skin, while she reigned in the giant animal.
Several stable hands came forward and grabbed the horses' reins as the riders dismounted.  The queen jumped down from the left side of her horse and began to walk towards Sean, and he watched her with wonder and pride.
She was the queen of Lia Fail, Alia Stark.  She demanded respect and her people gladly gave it.  Not one person in Lia Fail could gaze into those mysterious gold eyes and help but pledge their loyalty.  Sean marveled at the round soft features of her face, a contradiction to the strength of this lady.  She was forty-eight, he knew that, but she didn’t look a day over thirty.

I was eighteen. A man in both body and mind. No longer was I the boy that wished to prove himself a man. There was no doubting it—everyone knew the man I had become. My wife, family and friends were proud of the person I now was.
Everyone knew, as did I, that as the first born son I would be the inheritor of my father's reign. Unless of course, something should happen to me.
Now, in being a husband and a prince, I was of the right mind to have many sons. This was, after all, the way of my people.
I was hunting, readying my wife, soon to be born child and myself for the winter that was quickly approaching. From afar I heard my sister's voice calling me. “Amari! Amari! Come... come quick! It is time!”
The thought came that I must have lost track of time, I had not realized that I had been away so long. That morning Sulika mentioning that she felt some discomfort. When I asked her if she would be alright, she assured me that she was fine, that there was nothing to worry about as she still had another two weeks before her child baring day. So clenching my teeth, I went ahead and left to hunt, deciding against my better judgment.
And yet, here was my little sister, gravely calling for me to return.
There was no denying it, the time had come. I would be a father. Today.
Running fast through the jungle, making certain that I would not miss the big event, I practically flew through it. All of the women gathered together in Sulika's birthing hut call out to me, urging me to hurry. Sulika had been calling for me. It was not customary that a man enter the birthing hut, but this time the women made an exception as I was being insistently requested by my wife.
Sulika's mother came to me, “Amari. Please, hurry. She has been calling for you.”
Sulika?” I called softly, she heard me and looked over in my direction. Her skin so very pale—a thin blanket of snow upon rich chocolate skin, it was. Completely flushed of color. Her lips were dry and cracked.
She saw me and reached to me, “Amari,” she spoke, so softly, so void of strength, that I barely made out what she had said. “Come.”
Closing the distance between us, I sat at her side and took her hand in mine. Then grabbed a rag that was beside me and wiped her head. “I'm here now. Fear not.”
She smiled a very weak, fragile grin, “Yes. Thank you.” This birthing was indeed taking a toll on her.
“No worries love, soon it will all be over and you will be holding our baby in your arms in no time at all,” I smiled at her and continued chatting, hoping inwardly that it was making her feel better. “It will be a boy. Strong, like his father. His mother's eyes. We will walk around the entire village displaying his greatness. Everything will be over before you know it.”
A contraction. She squeezed my hand with whatever strength she still contained. She moaned and whimpered. My heart broke for her. With my other hand, I rubbed her back, “I am here, love. I am right here.” She breathed, trying to ease the pain. Still it was of no use because she had no strength. No fight was left in her. So once again I commenced my babbling, hoping that to a certain extent it would help her feel better—even if just the slightest bit. “When he grows, I will make sure that he becomes the tribe's best hunter. And, he will be the tribe's strongest man,”
She looked at me with hopeless eyes. “What if it is a girl?”
“Well if it is a girl, she will look and be everything like her mother. Nothing like her father. I would not want to ruin a perfectly good thing.”
Another contraction. She tensed. I could feel the pain that ran through her also run through me. I wished and prayed to all the tribal gods that they would help me ease her pain somehow.
My mother pulled me aside for just a moment. “Amari, she is not well. We are doing everything we can. But, her labor is not normal. The child is breached. She is losing too much blood.”
My hands began to shake, I was irrecoverably unnerved. “What is going to happen, Mama?”
“I do not know my son. We are doing all that we can. I hope the gods help her through this.”
For a long time, I did not leave her side, not letting her hand go for a second. I could feel the life drain from her with every breath. I worried deeply for her and my unborn child.
After several hours of agony and pain, it was time.
All the women scurried around her, cheering her on as best as they could. Some ran about trying to collect cloths, others gathered hot water, some had tools in their hands. And Sulika, was weakened— flimsy and lifeless. I panicked. They were screaming, yelling, fussing about.
All of it seemed like a blur. My eyes were fixed on my wife, observing that she was even paler now,  than just a little while ago. I bent over her. If it was a reflex of protection or desperation, I do not know. I needed to collect my emotions. Then I kissed my wife's forehead and whispered into her ears. “Everything is going to be alright.”
“No... it is not.” was her reply, and her words seeped out of her lips like soft, supple smoke from a dimming candle. Barely audible, barely there.
“Push, Sulika, push!” Someone demanded. She used whatever strength she had and pushed. This went on for just a few minutes. At one given moment she pushed with all her might. Then, I heard my wife take a long aching breath, and breathed no more.
My heart dropped to my stomach.
I looked at her, staring, hoping that what I had just seen was in my own imagination. I heard more commotion. The women were running amuck. They began to yell and scream to each other.
Everything turned into slow motion. Muffled voices, screams and cries. Yet my eyes were fixed on my wife.
For a split second I looked down at the child. A girl. She was right, but the babe was lifeless as well. She flopped like a wet rag in the arms of my mother-in-law.
Just like that, it was all over. My wife and my child were gone. I had lost everything that meant anything to me in a matter of a day. I was broken. Destroyed.
I named the child Alala, meaning like a dream—for that was all that she had been. A dream...
We buried them together, the tomb read; “My FIRST and ONLY wife, Sulika and our little angel Alala. You will never be forgotten.”
