Author Spotlight: Daniel Peyton

Description:

The wizard wars ended over a thousand years ago, and nearly all the ancient wizards were destroyed. The evil betrayer, the one who started the war to begin with, remains. For a thousand years he has worked his will in secret. His goal is to find the last Dragonwand so he can regain his powers as the dark dragon. Close to the king of Gallenor and master of the court, the betrayer has the nation bowing to his machinations.
Sixteen year old Markus is looking for a wizard who will give him a letter of recommendation for the college of wizardry. Unaware of the Dragonwand or the betrayer, he stumbles upon Tolen the Wise. Little does Markus realize that this man is an ancient, like the betrayer. Instead of giving him a letter, Tolen sends Markus on a journey to stop the darkness by finding the Dragonwand before the betrayer can.
Markus and the friends he meets along the way are the only ones that stand between the betrayer and the fruition of his millennium of preparation. Will Markus get to the wand first? Where are all the other wizards? Can the betrayer truly be stopped?

Except:

Markus hurt and he was sinking fast. He looked up to see the light above him and he started to swim to the surface. It was a burdensome challenge with what felt like a broken arm.
What was that?! Something just shot into the water, then another. Arrows! Someone was shooting at him!
Cresting the water and gasping in a harsh breath, Markus saw that two dogkinds were pointing arrows at him from the shore. The Dog people of the Blue Forests were expert marksmen and would not miss unless that is what they intended.
“GET OUT OF OUR WATERS, IMP!” a strong female voice yelled at him.
Markus continued to breathe hard and struggled to keep himself afloat. Moving was even harder, since he only had one good arm. “I..I can’t! I need help!” He garbled out as loud as he could while the water began to consume him, the pain in his arm too great to hold him up.
The light brown furred canine woman looked at the man next to her, “He may not be an imp. Rescue him before he drowns.” She commanded and the male dogkind dropped his bow and jumped into the water.
After a swift swim and quick rescue, Markus was laid on the shore by his hero. He coughed while doing his best not to show the pain he was in. “Thank you, whoever you are.”
Then he heard the stretching sound of an arrow being readied. He looked up to see the point of it directed at his face. The brown furred dog woman flashed her fangs, “What sort of being are you?”
“Human,” he quickly stated while holding his arms up in defense.
She glared at him and then released the arrow. It struck the ground right next to his head. In fact he felt the shaft of the arrow brushing up against his ear.
“WHAT ARE YOU DOING!!?” He tried to scoot away from her, but his broken arm prevented the escape. “OW, OW, OW!”
She lowered her bow and leaned over to look at him, “If you were impkind, you would have transformed back and flown away.”
His eyes bugged, “Imp! You thought I was an imp?!”
The male dogkind held out his hand to help Markus up, “We have been tracking a rogue imp through these trees for a week now. It has played many devious tricks on us to attempt to lull us into a false sense of security.”
“I can assure you that I am no imp. I am human and in a lot of pain.” He got to his feet and held his broken arm.
The male dogkind looked at Markus's arm and then nodded toward the trees, “Come with us, our healer can mend that easily.”
“Thanks. Where do you live?”
“These forests are our home.”
“So, what is your name? I am Markus of the Valley.”
The male dogkind answered, “I am Treb, that is my wife Kiin.” Treb noticed that Markus was getting a good look at his wife’s back side, in particular her tail. “Have you not seen my kind before?”
Markus looked up, embarrassed at having stared at this man’s wife. “No, in fact I have not. I know of your people, you’re dogkind.”
Kiin shot Markus a glare, “That is the human name for us. We are the Rakki.” She was proud of this title and made sure he knew it.
“Rakki it is then.” A glow of green light caught the corner of his eye and he looked just in time to see it coming. “WATCH OUT!”
Treb grabbed Markus and pushed him out of the way just as the bolt of energy blasted the ground near them. Both dogs grabbed their bows and nocked arrows in them to fire. Flying around was a small demon with bat wings. It was an imp, a mischievous pest that had no feelings for what it destroyed.
Kiin launched arrow after arrow at the little monster, only to miss. She was good, but it was faster than her and could evade her with ease. Cackling, the imp lobbed more energy balls. With a well-placed shot, it threw Kiin across the ground and partly into the water. She was out cold, but still breathing. Then it turned its sights on Markus.
Without hesitation Markus held out his hand and said, “WAND!” It appeared on command. He log rolled to the side to dodge a green energy blast and then he yelled, “ELDR!” The wand produced an impressive ball of fire that destroyed the next incoming energy attack and continued on to blast the imp out of the air. When the little creature hit the ground Treb sent one last arrow at it, piercing it through. Within seconds the imp exploded in a flash of green.
Markus sat for a second, shocked by his own power. He had never created a spell that well and that powerful before.
“KIIN!” Treb ran over to his wife and found her on the ground, out cold.
Markus got up and quickly joined him. “Is she okay?”
Treb looked her over, sniffing her with his nose. “I don’t know. She is still breathing and does not look hurt, but she won’t wake. Damned imp spells.”
“What can we do?”
Treb looked at Markus and then at his wand, “You’re a wizard, can’t you do something?”
Markus shook his head and stepped back, “No, I…I am not a real wizard. I am not even an apprentice.”
“Come, we have to return to the village. The healers can help.” Treb gently picked up his wife and carried her in his arms. Markus took up Kiin’s bow and carried that as he followed right behind them.

Excerpt:

“Go”, “Two minutes”, was hollered out. Alex felt nervous even though most of the men at the speed-dating meeting didn’t appear her type. The fact that they wouldn’t find her their type bothered her most.
“Hi, my name is Rick. I work at a comic book store” was all Alex heard. He had shoulder length hair, a beard and his shirt was wrinkled.  “Your turn”.
“Hi, I’m Alex. A widow. Customer service rep. My daughter just got married.”  She was on auto-pilot. She repeated the same thing with every guy. “Tell me more about yourself,” was her next line so she wouldn’t have to really participate. And they did.
Why did she agree to do this? Kathleen was crazy. She actually looked like she was having fun.
“Go! Two minutes.”
And it repeated, this time with a manager of Burger King. Ugh! These men were so boring. It’s no wonder they couldn’t find dates. “I love reading and watching science fiction. I have the complete set of Star Wars collectables.”
This was pure torture. Kathleen owed her. Having her eyebrows waxed was better than this.
“Go! Two minutes”.
This one had a real job. “I work at a bank.”
“Oh, what do you do?” Alex was a bit intrigued.
“Oh, I meant to say I worked a bank. Until I went to jail for embezzling. I have served my time and am looking for work right now. I’m on probation for five years,” Mitchell said with a smile.
“Isn’t that a felony?” Alex couldn’t believe she was having this conversation.
“Yeah, I’ll get a job soon. I’m staying with my mom right now. She has plenty of room and doesn’t mind if I bring the ladies by,” he managed with a wink.
“Go! Two minutes”.
Thank God it was almost over! Alex was never going to repeat this experience. As her last speed-date babbled on about his inability to wear corrective shoes, Alex watched Kathleen laugh and chat away with hers. Kathleen looked like she really enjoyed doing this. Alex was in awe--and misery.
When it was finally over Alex and Kathleen headed to the bar for a drink to compare notes.
“This was too much fun! These guys are a riot! I think I may meet the ex-con for drinks later!” Kathleen giggled at the thought of her possible date.
“Are you insane?” Alex couldn’t believe her ears.
“Did you not have fun Alex?” Kathleen looked genuinely surprised.
“Kathleen, I realize your fun and my fun are two totally different things. You know I would do anything for you but NEVER ask me to do this again! It was pure torture!” Alex didn’t mean to come across so agitated but she just couldn’t help it.
Kathleen looked a bit hurt but after her first margarita she was understanding and agreed to take her sister next time. Alex couldn’t wait to get home, take a long shower and crawl into bed. Suddenly, being alone sounded wonderful.

Author Spotlight; Frederick Crook

Beloved RWPPs,

Today we bring to you a New Release by Mr. Frederick Crook called Campanelli: Sentinel, available TODAY December 1st, 2014 on Amazon.com.

Here we go...

Author’s Bio

Author Website

Frederick was born in Chicago in 1970 and now lives in Villa Park with his wife, Rae and their three miniature dachshunds. He began by writing fictional works all through high school, earned an Associate Degree of Applied Science in Electronics in 1994 and the Bachelor of Science in Technical Management from DeVry University in 2005.

In 2009, Frederick began writing his first novel, The Dregs of Exodus, which was self-published in late 2010. This was followed up with another novel, The Pirates of Exodus in 2012.

Throughout that year and early 2013, he continued writing and published four short stories in eBook form for Kindle and Nook. All of these stories share the same premise, but all are independent from one another, though the short eBook, Campanelli: The Ping Tom Affair and his third novel, issued by Solstice Publishing, Campanelli: Sentinel, share the same main characters.

He loves writing and enjoys meeting and talking to readers at book signing events.

Blurb

It is 2110 and migration to the colony planet, Alethea, has depleted Earth of billions of people. As a result, migration has been declared illegal by all world governments. Human trafficking becomes highly profitable for organized crime and their influence reaches beyond the Earth’s atmosphere. Many starships returning from Alethea are diverted from the scrapping process and secretly refurbished, allowing the population to shrink further.

Frank Campanelli is a blind Chicago Police detective who depends on his fully functional bio-electronic implants to see and do his job. After assisting on a botched infiltration of a top human trafficking network, he and his partner, Marcus Williams, are transferred into the CPD’s Organized Crime Division to head the newly formed Sentinel group and bring down the Ignatola family business.

Here is an Excerpt

Frank took manual control of the car and set its alert status to ‘Condition Two’. The car’s computer sent out its signal to traffic lights and other computerized vehicles, clearing the way for them. The blue lights flashed and the siren whooped and warbled to warn pedestrians and non-computerized vehicles of their presence.

Campanelli adjusted his lenses to zoom in just enough that he saw the leading edge of his vehicle’s hood and beyond. This gave him advanced warning of upcoming pavement hazards. He kept his thought commands on visual adjustments, putting them back to default when the car was in traffic and zooming forward again once the road was clear ahead. Frank’s full-service lenses had an advantage over the standard bio-electronic breed. His fully encompassed the surface of the eyes to give him the benefit of peripheral vision. When he magnified his view, it was not merely like looking through binoculars, it was akin to being physically thrust forward a few feet, albeit with some distortion at the edges of his field of view. With this advantage, Frank Campanelli had the reputation of being a rather insane driver, but from his point of view, he simply saw more detail than others and drove to match.

As it was Saturday morning, the traffic was light. As a result, Frank could get the car up to eighty miles an hour at times, broken up by sudden slowing and lane changing to avoid a vehicle or road hazard. This unsettled Marcus Williams to no end, forcing the veteran to increase his serotonin levels as he held on to the door handle and center console while plastering his feet into the floorboards.

The engine whined and whistled with acceleration, alternating with the crying of rubber whenever the brakes were hit hard or the steering yoke was twitched to go around something.

Marcus was just glad they were not in pursuit, otherwise Frank would be in a real hurry.

Campanelli slowed at the corner of State and Madison and hung a tight left. The powerful car accelerated like a shot, but the siren went quiet. Marcus dared to open his eyes and saw that the road ahead was deserted of pedestrians, cars and potholes.

The siren sounded again as they approached the intersection at Dearborn. Dodging around a CTA bus, Frank made the turn and accelerated again, though only briefly as they were close to their destination.

Suddenly, the siren quieted and the motor wound down to its near-silent normalcy. Marcus opened his eyes in time to see the blue lights cycle one last time before going out. The light at West Washington Street still turned green for them, indicating that Frank had set the car to ‘Condition Four’: ‘No lights, no sirens, just an officer in kind of a hurry’, as it had been explained to him once by someone he could not remember.

Guest Article by Frederick Crook--Campanelli: The Progression of Exodus

Hello my dearest followers!

Today we bring to you a special Guest Article by Mr. Frederick Crook.

Mr. Crook, take it away...

Y. Correa has been kind enough to ask me: How did I come up with the premise for Campanelli: Sentinel? Frank Campanelli, the main character of this novel and the previously self-published e-book, Campanelli: The Ping Tom Affair is the product of a future Earth that has gone through what I have called, “The Great Exodus”. That is the idea I have created that approaches dystopia in what I hope was from a unique direction. For the vast majority of humans, they have simply relocated to a “Super Earth” named Alethea, a wonderful, but sadly, fictional planet lying on the other side of a star approximately thirty light years away. Over the period of fifty or so years, billions of people relocate to this planet, at first simply to be pioneers, but after a time, as the best and brightest leave, it becomes a near necessity. Technology here on Earth snaps back like a rubber band and the quality of life for everyone declines.

In Frank Campanelli’s time, that is 2110 for the sake of “Sentinel”, this problem becomes so severe that the world governments pass an anti-migration law. The problem is that the starships sent out sixty years earlier are still returning. Frank and is partner are transferred into the “Sentinel” squad of the Chicago Police Department which is in charge of quelling human trafficking networks.

The truly interesting thing about Frank Campanelli is that he is blind.

While living in New York, the career police detective experiences a fire in his apartment building which kills his wife and daughter and takes his eyesight from him. The details of the tragedy may well come out in future books. His eyes are replaced by medical grade bio-electronic implants. While many of the characters of my other works feature bio-electronics, Frank’s are more fully functional in order to provide him with full 3-dimensional vision.

The following is an excerpt from Campanelli: Sentinel:

Frank took manual control of the car and set its alert status to ‘Condition Two’. The car’s computer sent out its signal to traffic lights and other computerized vehicles, clearing the way for them. The blue lights flashed and the siren whooped and warbled to warn pedestrians and non-computerized vehicles of their presence.

I’m sure many of you caught the references to thought commands and serotonin levels. The bio-electronics devices that I feature in any of my books and short stories are in our future. Today, technologies exist that have the ability to tie into a person’s brain to link their thoughts to a computer. At this point, the technology is focused on those that truly need it; the physically infirm or disabled. But experiments in other areas are being conducted now. Have a gander at this article: Tech Embeddable Implants

Imagine bio-electronic implants that can be controlled by a thought via a miniature pc. Chances are you’re already carrying one on you. The computing power in your smartphone will be advanced and further miniaturized, making such features as I describe in Campanelli: Sentinel and my earlier novels and short stories, commercially available.

But, “Sentinel” is not all about implants and futuristic devices. None of my stories are. Like my very first novel, The Dregs of Exodus, it is the people that I focus on. My characters are in a unique position of having to live in a world that is in a steady decline, not an Armageddon-like scenario or an Apocalyptic, tragic end. I sure hope readers will appreciate that change. Like “Star Trek”, the vast majority of humankind is prosperous, in my post-“Great Exodus” creations they’re just being so elsewhere.

Excerpt one, taken from Chapter one:

A deafening blast blew the door open, knocking Senon to the ground. He quickly picked himself up as an ear splitting scream followed, forcing both him and Marcaria to crouch over their daughter. With their hands over their ears, they waited for the scream to die down. They rose to their feet as soon as it did. The scream was the witches’ scream, deadly, if anyone came close to it. A series of blue, green, and yellow flares flew at them but Larissa had used her shield. “Good girl,” said Senon. “Father, so...hard...” Larissa lost her strength and the spell collapsed. “We can’t stay here, Senon.” Marcaria picked Larissa up and ran to the garden. Senon looked at the space where the door once stood and followed his family to the back of the house. The attacks were aimed from afar, but Senon knew the Empire Witches were moving closer into their village. The most powerful and merciless on Zrotaz, were the Witches of the West, the Empire Witches will do anything to get what they want, and this time it was the girl. No one had yet defeated this clan, meaning Senon and Marcaria alone did not stand a chance.

THE RADICAL by Sarah Michelle Lynch

Hello RWPPs!

Today we have Author Sarah Michelle Lynch visiting us with an excerpt of THE RADICAL.

Ryken gestured for us to head to the back of a carriage and for me to look as inconspicuous as possible. Yeah, like how was I gonna do that?

We held our breath and kept a watch on the carriage doors throughout the journey; our hearts racing each time the train creaked to a stop at a station along the way.

When a suspicious character started wandering toward us, Ryken turned his body to mine in my window seat, eclipsing me. Protecting me.

‘Play along,’ he said.

I saw new intent in his eyes and it frightened me. His warm palm came up to my cheek while his other slid its way under my skirt to grab my thigh.

‘No‒’ I tried to protest.

His mouth came down on mine and he sucked on my top lip, pulling savagely so that my flesh hit the underside of my nose. I heard the sound as he pulled back and he grunted after letting me go.

‘No?’ he countered.

I grabbed his cheeks and brought his mouth back on mine, slicing my tongue between his lips to enter his mouth. We both had terrible breath and his stubble grated. However, my blood started pumping faster than ever before. I relaxed into my chair and he took over, pressing his chest against mine, lifting my thigh into his hand to stroke the underside.

Shit, I wanted to fuck him so bad.

‘Seraph, Jesus…’

When I felt relaxed, I put my arms around his deluxe shoulders, allowing him to continue kissing me passionately. My hand strayed into his hair and a thumb rubbed the edge of his ear, while my leg moved in sequence with his touch. I was almost lost to deep, sensual yearning. When he slowed down to plant a delicate butterfly kiss on my bottom lip, we eyed each other closely and I felt a seismic tremor shudder through me.

‘This cannot be happening,’ I pleaded. I looked into his eyes and saw a rich passion I wanted to find out more about.

‘I just needed some praise. That will give me enough bolster to get by with. Put your faith in me, angel.’

I nodded and gave him a smile, tugging gently on his silky hair. When a guard started walking down the aisle, Ryken went back to assessing whether there was any danger and I merely stared out of the window as though I was just another ordinary woman on a day trip. As soon as we heard over the tannoy that the next stop was King’s Cross, we stood together and he took my hand, his fingers through mine tender and reassuring.

I began preparing myself for London – that heaving metropolis of sweaty, agitated bodies crammed into as many tight spaces as possible. There was absolutely no population control. From what I had seen on that video in York and online, the skyline was littered with dozens and dozens of tower blocks, skyscrapers and multiple recycling plants.

Room was so tight people could no longer afford bathrooms of their own and had ended up having to use public baths to cleanse themselves. Most of these establishments had turned into centers for drug runners and small-time hoodlums to doss about in.

Traffic jams were never-ending, black smog left the place in perpetual darkness, and the river clung to itself in a congealed cesspit of excrement and fly-tipping. It is going to be hell itself, I thought. We would be lucky to escape. Lucky to survive the radioactive abyss.
