"Return to Hues" by Synful Desire

Greetings Readers, Writers and Precious Patrons! In case you were unaware, May is National Short Story Month. As part of this month, representatives from the All Authors Publishing House will be stopping by to share snippets of their short stories.

First up, we have Synful Desire. 

One of the first individuals signed to All Authors Publishing House, she made her debut with her micro-short "Kona". Since then, Synful Desire has gone on to write independent works as well as contribute to anthologies. 

One anthology series she is a part of is Concordant Vibrancy. Today, she shares a bit of her contribution in the 2nd book in the Concordant Vibrancy series Vitality, with her contemporary tale "Return to Hues".

Prologue

Earth

It was a great day to be in Krimsdale Park. There was not a cloud in the sky and the humidity was miniscule, practically none. In the distance, the other kids had gathered, showing off their latest summer toys.

Gracie wanted to be part of the fray. She had something that would outshine the flock. Four big shiny balloons—one red, one blue, one yellow, and one green. No, they didn’t cost a lot of money but they could fly. She bet they could fly higher than Dirk McGregor’s kite—the one that he’d brag about whenever he had an audience.

Yet, her parents were being incredibly stubborn until she pulled out the final weapon in her arsenal. Her deep set green eyes misted and her pink bottom lip poked out in a frown. Soon, her mom’s gaze softened, followed by her mom looking at her dad. Gracie recognized the parents’ unspoken language and she prayed Mom was telling Dad subliminally to reconsider.

“All right Gracie but only for a little while.” Her dad relented.

Gracie let out a whoop and ran towards the crowd, remembering to keep a tight grip on her four balloons. Dirk spotted her approaching, opting to step in front of her path. He gripped his shiny new kite and placed it in front of his chest. Dirk’s stance reminded Gracie of a knight, putting his shield before his body in preparation for an attack.

“Well, well, well, if it isn’t Goosie Gracie!” The other kids circled around Gracie, repeating the dreaded nickname in a sing-song fashion.

The melodious taunting did not deter her. “You think you’re so great with your new kite. I bet you that my balloons can fly higher than your stinky ol’ kite!”

The crowd paused in mid note. Dirk’s expression went from shock, to confusion, to a blip of anger before settling on confidence. “All right Goosie Gracie, you’re on.”

Synful Desire surrenders herself to write whatever resides in her mind. More often than not, these things laugh and rebel against what is accepted in society. How Concordant Vibrancy Came to Fruition

Four score and seven years ago …

 

Oh, wait, that the start of something else.

Now, where were we? Ah, yes! Concordant Vibrancy. First, we have to take a trip back in time.

After Self-Published Indie Authors Support Group transformed into All Authors Support Group, founder Y. Correa wanted to blossom in other areas.

First, Y wanted a spot where authors could read about other authors, via All Authors Blog and All Authors Magazine.

Then, Y wanted an area to deliver author services—All Authors Graphic Design.

In addition, due to some of the horror stories that she heard from traditional and indie authors alike, Y wanted to provide an area where one could choose the level of representation while still holding on to facets of their own creativity via All Authors Publishing House.

Although All Authors Support Group has faded into the sunset, it planted the seeds for the current All Authors Publications & Promotions.

An item which was of paramount importance to the organization was to have caveats to show appreciation for dedication, not just to the authors who are part of the All Authors Publishing House but also the people who work diligently with All Authors Magazine. One perk was the invitation to be a part of an anthology series, sponsored by All Authors.

After scrambling our brains to figure out what to call it, we finally settled on Concordant Vibrancy.

Concordant: consistency, harmony

Vibrancy: pulsating with life, vigor or activity

The purpose of the Concordant Vibrancy series is to have members of the All Authors family—from all different genres—come together under one theme and showcase their vibrancy via their words. 

The 1st book in the series was subtitled Unity. Utilizing leaves as the representation of earth and connective component, the participants adopted their renditions of what symbolized Unity through their writings. 

This next book—the 2nd in the Concordant Vibrancy series—is subtitled Vitality, represented by wind. The theme question “What force drives your spirit?” brought forth all types of answers—from essays to short stories.

Concordant Vibrancy 2 Blog Tour: Beem Weeks

Beem Weeks here. I’m a 40-something-year-old indie author, blogger, blog talk radio host, columnist for All Authors magazine, and reviews coordinator for Rave Reviews Book Club. I have written many short stories, essays, poems, and the historical fiction/coming-of-age novel Jazz Baby. I have also released Slivers of Life: A Collection of Short Stories. I live to create with the written word. Among my literary influences I count Daniel Woodrell, Barbara Kingsolver, and Stephen Geez. As a teenager and young adult, I wrote concert and record reviews for a small publication. Journalism had been my intended field, but all that changed with the publication of a short story that eventually led to my first novel. Give me indie films, loud music, and a well-told story, and I’ll be just fine.

What prompted me to be a part of Concordant Vibrancy 2: Vitality? 

Aside from the honor and privilege of being invited, I loved the idea of speaking on the subject of "What drives my spirit?" Inspiration can be found all around us. This anthology offers the opportunity to share this news with the writing world. These pearls aren't ours to keep. When we find them, we are to share them with others. This is what keeps inspiration alive.

Excerpt from Letting Inspiration Take The Wheel: 

I’ve recently moved to the country after years of living within the city limits. Night time in the country, out among corn and soy bean fields, is vastly different from night time for city dwellers. In the city, there are lights everywhere, making it next to impossible to look up and admire God’s handy work. But there are no lights—outside of the moon—here in the country. I find myself stepping out to the back patio or to the front porch many nights, just to look up at the millions of stars flung against the expanse of an inky-black sky. It’s a simple pleasure, really, but one I have come to truly cherish. This, too, inspires me. 

Concordant Vibrancy 2 Blog Tour: Queen of Spades

There are different components to the writing anatomy which creates Queen of Spades—part passion of a poet and cadence of a storyteller.

Since the age of eleven, Queen of Spades' blood flowed with the rush of ideas that dripped in a rhythm inundated with stanzas. She first debuted as a presenter/poet in the collective, Soulful Branches: Words and Sounds.  Other poetic writes include Reflections of Soul, the Eclectic collection, Spaded Truths: Themes and Proclamations, Private Pain: Amidst these Ashes, and Spaded Truths 2: Life-O-Suction. In addition, Queen was a contributing writer in the April 2014 poetry collection Words of Fire and Ice, along with taking part in The Sea of Conscience and Waves to Light, both by M.J. Holman.

Reflections of Soul was selected as one Koobug’s top books. Private Pain: Amidst These Ashes hit the Amazon Bestseller List in three categories—Contemporary Poetry, Women’s Poetry, and Biographical Fiction.

Shortly thereafter, Queen of Spades’ desire for storytelling took spotlight alongside its poetic counterpart. Her first independent short story “Taint on Religion” debuted May 2014. Two other stories “Mr. Bradley’s Garden” and “When Summer Lingers” were first in the June 2014 collection Summer Shorts II: Best Kept Secrets prior to being released on their own.

The short story anthology Continuous Drips received distinction as an Amazon Best Selling Book and showcased the stories “Misfortune”, “Afro Shock”, and “Útil”. She also appeared in All Authors Publishing House’s 1st short story anthology, Concordant Vibrancy: Unity with her piece “The Authentic Snap.”

Some say Queen of Spades is a Poet of the People. Others label her a Life Writer. One thing remain constant in her delivery, whether it’s a poem or a story—it touches each individual in a sovereign way that lingers well after the diction is complete.

 What prompted you to be part of Concordant Vibrancy 2: Vitality?

While the first Concordant Vibrancy focused on individual concepts of unity, Vitality encouraged introspection to project what each writer considered a driving force. It did take a bit of time for me to come up with what I wanted to write, since there are many facets that can drive my spirit. Therefore, I had to hone the one which never wavered for me, inject it in the veins of the main character, and build the foundation to “Operation Restore”.

Excerpt:

I slid the bronze key into the keyhole. It did the familiar slight stick before complying with what I wanted. I stepped inside the house then paused, remembering the trick to avoid the disaster between key and knob. The shiny knob was gripped with one hand while the other hand did one, two, three quick jiggles prior to removal. A satisfying exhale leaked between my top and bottom lip as I closed and locked the back door.

While walking from room to room, pain and disgust put grooves in my normally calm demeanor. Disruption was in a number of spaces—a combination of torn and soiled clothing, neglected literature, and bundles of trash. One would easily surmise that a natural disaster of epic proportions had caused havoc in the historic house I once labeled home.

Yet, this was the work of one person. Matilda. Even in our union, she was not the cleanest of people. However, the least she could have done was left some type of structure. Perhaps Matilda was sending a message—a reminder of what our affair diminished into before she delivered its ending.
All of this muck simply would not do! This had to be put in order … at least as close as possible before I made my presence here years ago.

What prompted you to be part of Concordant Vibrancy 2: Vitality?

Hello Awesome Visitors, Let’s Talk.

I am the type of writer that tends to push the envelope and open myself to challenges. Although I entered the literary universe as an erotica author, focused on the LGBT arena, I never intended on staying on that planet. With Vitality, it was the perfect opportunity to use my advocacy of originality for a story that wouldn’t be a far cry from my usual writes. With “Return to Hues” I think it has been accomplished.

What prompted you to be part of Concordant Vibrancy 2: Vitality?

Asking me to be part of an anthology with such a strong premise is like reeling a fish with a hook. I just can't resist.

I do, however, feel that I should back track a smidgen.

The Concordant Vibrancy Collection is the brain child of All Authors, yet, participation is not mandatory but voluntary. So, although one might be affiliated to All Authors, one is not required to participate. Not even I, the All Authors President and Creator.

Nevertheless, when posed a premise such as that of "What force drives your spirit?" I am obliged to join as I felt an immediate connection to said plot.

That was the reason why I joined. I felt as though this was something that needed to be elaborated on in any which way and fashion. Of course, in being who I am, the short story that I contributed is more of a Science Fiction than anything else, but it promises to entice your imagination and think about what can happen when one's desires are misplaced.

Big City, USA

The announcer’s voice blared loudly through the speakers of the virtual reality billboard. 3D images of him bounced off of its pavement and sprang to life.  His hair was slicked back and dark, held by a bit too much hair gel and he wore a notably expensive Armani suit.

Are you tired of being normal? Tired of always fitting in? Tired of being just another jellybean in the bag? Are you sick of not being pretty enough, smart enough or strong enough?

Try Genomegenics. Our specialized laboratories can not only make your dream of being extraordinary come true, but they can make it happen without the need of cloning or rebirth.

What is a genome after all, if not a cell that can be moved or replaced?

Then don’t wait any longer. Genomegenics is waiting for you!

Exchange that high blood pressure for high cheek bones. Change up that nearsightedness to super sight. Trade out that mediocre brain of yours for nothing short of Einstein’s.

All it takes is a simple call … Better yet, a visit to Genomegenics!

Just as quickly as the announcer had finished his last words, an even faster talking announcer splayed out a string of information that no one could understand. Once he’d completed his speech, the screen flashed with an array of colors and sparks which led to the bursting of the gold and red company logo, with a one eight hundred number just below it.
The entire splendor of bouncing letters, digits and persons was concluded with a “Call or Visit Now!” Then the 3D commercial re-ran instantly.

“Joe, what do you think of Genomegenics? Sounds interesting, huh?” Peter asked just to sort of see what his lifelong best friend would reply.
Joe started his reply with a small hum of insecurity, “I don’t know man. I’ve never really trusted those things. It’s like they’re selling milk to a cow. Just full of empty promises, you know? I mean, how can anyone change the way they’re born? Not possible.”
