Rodger, thank you for stopping by today to chat with us.
To start off, tell us about yourself and what makes your story unique?
Well, I’m a CIA agent and I investigated Communist activities in Bolivia for the past two years. I took an undercover job at an oil company—I have a Bachelor Degree in Chemical Engineering—and my supervisor in the States called me home since I sympathized too much with the labor workers. I just wrapped up all the little details to my assignment when I met Leonora Harris. My story is unique because of her. It’s not every day a man finds a runaway bride who claims she’s from the 1700s in the middle of the Salar de Uyuni. It’s 1963, after all. Who in their right mind would believe a cockamamie story like hers?
What are some of the qualities that set you apart from
other romance heroes?
Hero? Wow, you’re making me blush. *Red fills his cheeks.* I like to think of myself as a normal guy. I don’t like to show off or toot my own horn, but I do what’s needed when the time is right. Once I set my mind on something, nothing stops me. Unlike some of the heroes in those silly romance books my sister likes to read, I didn’t fall all over myself to make Leonora happy. I interrogated her at every possible opportunity. You see, I didn’t believe Leonora’s story at first. As I got to know her better, I fell head over heels in love with her and realized she truly did time travel.
What would you say is your worst quality?
I’m a stubborn person. Leonora would probably call me
frustrating and pigheaded, but she’d say it with a smile on her face so you’d
never know she spoke the truth.
Let’s talk about your lady love, Leonora. She’s from a
different time period than yours, was it a struggle for her to adapt to her new
surroundings?
I don’t think I’d say a struggle. Though scared at first, she calmed down once she realized what happened to her and once she made a friend in me. She adapted pretty well and relished in her new opportunities. I’d never seen a more curious, excited woman as I told her women can chose whether they marry nowadays, at least in my home country. In 1725, her father forced her into an arranged marriage and she grew up believing she had no other option in life than being a wife and mother, or being homeless on the streets. Yes, Leonora misses her family but she’s more than grateful to have come to the present day.
At what point did you realize you were falling in love with Leonora?
I’m not sure. She did a lot of quaint little things that
turned my heart inside out and made me fall deeper.
For example, her eyes dazzled when I showed her how to
work the commode in my apartment. That’s not very romantic, but her strange
reactions to modern conveniences and things I find so common really weighed on
my conscience. I kept thinking ‘Is she crazy, or did she really time travel? What
the hell am I going to do with her in either case?’
Besides that,
she’s just a sweet, lovable person. I’m so happy to have met her.
Aside from the time difference, what other challenges did
the two of you face as a couple?
My first-line supervisor expected me back in the States
by the end of the month and I couldn’t take Leonora with me. Since she arrived in
Bolivia through a time portal, she obviously didn’t have any travel paperwork
or proof of her existence. I couldn’t just abandon her—I love the woman—and I
broke a few laws to secure her safety and her life at my side. I don’t regret
my illegal actions but my nerves nearly snapped a few times in the process.
Let’s talk about Amber Daulton, the author. Do you think she did a good job of telling your story?
Oh yeah, Amber’s the best. She has a way with words and almost drew me to tears once in the story. Almost, key word. You know, if not for Leonora and if not for Amber’s husband, I might’ve pursed her. I’m partial to brunettes. Anyway, next question.
Did you offer your input as she was writing the story?
Yes, a ton of input. Leonora and I sat down with Amber
over several weeks and told her what to write. Every time she tried to tweak
our story, we complained and gave her headaches. Needless to say, we whipped
her butt in gear a few times and she edited until we were happy.
Can readers expect to read more about you and Leonora, or
has your story come to an end?
When it comes to words, yes, our story is over but I plan
to make a lifetime of memories with Leonora and never look back. Our
granddaughter, Jaye, on the other hand, will have to look forward. In case you
didn’t know, Timeless Beginnings is
the prequel to Timeless Honor. Jaye accidentally travels
through the same time portal Leonora did and she arrives in my wife’s old
hometown just ten years after Leonora left. And you’ll never believe whom Jaye
falls in love with, but that’s another story…
